Dragon Qi Gong Tai Chi

Master William Ho Chi-gong (Qigong) Tai Chi Quan 92 form

“Qigong Tai Chi Quan” is traditional tai chi chuan, and during the orientation period all learners have to acquire the Taoist “Conversion Internally in Dan-tian” qigong with the skills of Taoist “keeping mind on Ming Men and direct qi adhering to the back”. However, due to short term vision, and have never studied the classical literature of the collections on tai chi chuan, they are not clear about that to practice tai chi chuan is just to practice moving qigong. Many people may feel several year “Natural Breath” practice would let nature take its course, it is just the “natural breath” as explained by the master. In fact, even many practitioners with decades of year experience on the tai chi chuan practice still have blurred understanding on the concept, breath taking for practicing the quan and normal breathing are not distinguished. 

“Qigong Tai Chi Quan” employs the technique of “Motional Postural Respiration”, emphasizing that the breath have to be combined with pattern and motion. Each movement in practicing must follow the opening/closing rule of “Yin/Yang”, accompanied by deep breathing of “Keeping Mind on Ming Men”. Every school of systematic martial arts has its own set of rules on taking-in/exhaling and drawing-in/releasing-out, which is put as the physical state of forwarding/receding and attacking/defending. Tai chi chuan is a school of martial arts but not gym exercises, the martial arts would lose original significance and effectiveness if the practice does not comply with the requirements and the principles

There is the requirement on the “Motional Respiration Breathing” that, application of technical pattern is purposely combined with qi moving breath in every movement, this is completely different from the “Natural Breathing”. Because of the qi moving integrated in all attacking/defending, the results of which is much better than the ones of  “Natural Breathing”, especially for the occasion of “power releasing”, the power tends to be not sufficient if there is no combined in-out breathing. The breathing in conjunction with motional pattern of movements, which has been widely applied in many sporting items, is can be said that the motion is an advanced skill in sports. Since tai chi chuan is one of the most advanced items in all martial arts, the employment of the “Motional Respiration Breathing” technique is reasonable. The theories of medical treatment state that, exercise with excess oxygen consumption is a major measure on rehabilitation which is taken after therapeutic treatment by doctors.

When practicing the “Qigong Tai Chi Chuan” which is featured with “Motional Respiration Breathing”, strict rules must be followed at any speed for motion. More specially: evenly breathing, physical body movement at even speed, and postural technique follows breathing for changed shape. There is an old saying: “Dragon Shape and Monkey Portrait”, which refers to physical technique and postural shape, and states that the whole body is loosened and stretched out as the usual posture of “dragon” when in-breathing, while contracting of the body is the other way round for out-breathing as the usual posture of monkey. The text of Tai Chi Chuan classics explains the techniques in detail, “containing the chest to pull the back upright and withdrawing the belly on hip squat when doing in-breathing”, at the same time “keeping mind on Ming Men and direct the qi adhering to the back”, then followed by “tucking the tailbone to hang up the crotch”, and that leads to a state of contracting body. Vise verse, for out-breathing that, the whole body is loosened up completely, all muscles and the skeleton is stretched out and pulled out with the mind set of “the crown of the head is suspended by an imaged lifting force” (xu-ling-ding-jin), as at the time it is called “complete voidness” which is eventually going to be “all”.

This set of “Qigong Tai Chi Chuan” which are fully based on the requirements of the classical Taoist qigong and the theories of tai chi chuan, has been the achievement through extensive studies and meditation practices by the efforts of over two generations, and actually verified widely by many other disciples or learners, the effects resulting from the practice is much more beneficial if compared with the “natural breathing”. Practitioners would not only enjoy great heath, and also would perform rapid reactions and body movements for self defending. More, the skill of “four Liang force often can dispel the momentum of a thousand Jin power” can be a handy maneuvere, and the person would not suffer a loss.  Anyone who successfully practices “Qigong Tai Chi Chuan” being in a strict accordance with the requirements of the “Motional Respiration Breathing” will reach the dual aims of having a prolonged healthy life and strengthened fitness for self-defense.

太極預備式 (敬禮式) . 一個呼吸. Preparation (Salute) one in-out.

1. 太極起勢. 一個呼吸. Beginning of Tai-chi, one in-out.

2. 攬雀尾. (左掤手). 四個呼吸. Grasp Sparrow’s Tail, Ward-off Left, Four  in-out.

3. 單鞭, 蕩手和按掌, 三個呼吸. Single Whip, Three in-out.

4. 提手上勢, 兩個呼吸. Lift Hand, two in-out.

5. 白鶴亮翅, 兩個呼吸. White Crane Spreads Wings, Two in-out.

6. 左摟膝拗步, 一個呼吸. Brush Knee and Twist Step, Left, one in-out.

7. 手揮琵琶, 一個呼吸. Playing Guitar, one in-out.
